ADD: Adult ADD Symptoms Can Be Different

Submitted by: Tellman H. Knudson

If you have ADD, you remember what it was like to have attention deficit as a child, and though you may think you outgrew the ADD symptoms, you could be mistaken. ADD symptoms manifest themselves differently when the complexities of adult life take over. Here are some examples:

Everyone knows the effects of hyperactivity in children, who are unable to stay in one place without moving for very long. But that ADD symptom can present itself differently in adults. They may be excessive talkers. They may have bouts of feeling quite overwhelmed. Or, they may have uncontrollable arousal. Though the first symptom change isn't life debilitating, the other two can be. If you find yourself sinking into either of these issues, it's best to seek professional help to get those emotions back under control. You don't have to be a victim of them.

Another adult ADD symptom that changes is impulsivity. You may be an impulse shopper or you may be quite decisive, which can be the positive side of the coin. But you may also be irritable and quick to anger. Or, you may be a jokester, who can't prevent blurting out insulting or rude remarks. You may also have trouble with timing in interpersonal relationships. If any of these issues become problematic to you, it's a good idea to find a professional counselor who can help you to lesson these issues and help you improve your relationships with others. Nobody wants to be alone, and if this ADD symptom gets too extreme, that's what will happen. Nobody will want to be around you.

The least troubling of the changing attention deficit symptoms is inattentiveness. You may have some trouble with zoning out, and that can be embarrassing in an important meeting, but that may not happen all the time. This symptom change can also mean that you have no patience for mundane tasks, like paying the bills. If that's the case, you can get into trouble, unless you hire an accountant. You just have to realize your weakness in that area and do it. But the best of the ADD symptoms changes is in your ability to hyperfocus. You can concentrate on one thing to the exclusion of all other things, and accomplish whatever you set your mind to in this way very quickly. It took people like Leonardo da Vinci, Charles Schwab, and Louis Pasteur very far.

If you're an adult with attention deficit, you have to monitor the ADD symptoms that may turn negative. If you find this happening to you, be sure to get help quickly. You have some incredible qualities. You're probably very smart and think at the speed of light. You are creative and you have that incredible ability to hyperfocus. But the minute you see any of your ADD symptoms going in the wrong direction, get help. Nobody needs to go through life feeling miserable. You're much too special for that.
