Beating Teenage Acne

Submitted by: Mark I Wilson

It is tough enough being a teenager today without having to put up with the hassle and stigma of that most common teen curse -- acne. The last thing you need is to take a hit to your confidence that can have lasting psychological effects if you're not careful. Whether you are experiencing the occasional onslaught of blemishes and pimples, or a more severe breakout, using a blemish acne cream is worth considering.

With an ever increasing array of acne treatments and creams in the stores today it is no wonder that people become confused as to what product to select and how to go about treating the condition. Another factor that can come in to play is that for some, discussing the condition of their skin with others is embarrassing and avoided at all costs. On the other hand, walking right up to someone you know and asking, “how do you treat your spots?” is almost sure to meet with an indignant response!

If embarrassment is not an issue and you feel you want to talk to someone about your acne there are dermatology clinics in just about every shopping mall these days. You can feel safe in the knowledge that they have treated far worse skin conditions than yours and will have valuable assistance to offer. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have and offer advice on a suitable acne cream. If your condition is particularly bad, they may even recommend a series of treatments to get you started.

An alternative is to treat the acne yourself using off-the-shelf products, and this is certainly very doable in most circumstances. You can purchase dedicated blemish and acne creams in most pharmacies or through one of the many online skin care stores if you prefer. Most of the common treatments contain a salicylic acid formulation which has been proven to be very effective against the cause of spots, but can sometimes be harsh on sensitive skin. Whichever treatment you decide on, make sure to follow the instructions carefully and if you find that it is causing skin irritation or a rash or any kind, stop using it and visit your doctor for advice on what to do next.

The main reason that acne suddenly becomes a problem once you enter your teenage years is that your hormones are all over the place during this time. It is wise to make some allowances for the fact that there are significant changes occurring in your body. Teenage acne is not solely the result of a diet full of junk food, although it certainly won’t help matters. But equally, you can make changes to your normal eating habits to give acne less chance of becoming an issue for you. Making sure that you include fresh vegetables and fruit in your daily diet, along with drinking lots of fresh water will certainly help. Avoiding sugary and oily foods is a good idea as well and the effects will be apparent for all to see – as well as in the mirror -- in a relatively short space of time.
