There are plenty of opportunities for men to become models, because as yet, it simply doesn't draw the same attention. Partially due to this fact, the male modeling industry is considered to be more relaxed than the female industry. Models can start later, have a career spanning a much greater length of time, and still be paid well for the best shoots. However, it isn't all fun and games – male models require as much drive and determination as their female counterparts and there are still presumed industry standards that need to be met. Ideal Attributes For The Male Model Ideal height is between 5”11' and 6”2' with ideal wight being 175lbs or less. Most male models being their career when aged between 18 and 25 but can continue into their forties. For fashion shoots, male models typically need to be well toned without looking like a bodybuilder. However, body models are required in the male industry too. You could model eye-wear, shoes, or other products without having to have an all-over look. Be Healthy And Look Good Whatever route you take, and whatever type of modeling career you want to pursue, you need to look healthy and in good shape. This may mean going to the gym, getting fit and staying in good shape, but it will help guarantee the better roles and the better shoots. Most agencies and clients prefer tanned men, but again it's important not to get carried away. A natural appearance is equally as important as looking strong, fit, and bronzed. The Big City You will find it easier to move closer to the action. Modeling agencies are primarily located in cities, and the bigger the city, the greater the opportunity for work. If you are unable or unwilling to move then you will have to be prepared to travel a lot to get to interviews and shoots. Your First Portfolio A portfolio is a must-have even for the most inexperienced model. When looking for an agent, the shots don't have to be too professional, but they do need to be individual shots of you. It's also good ti get several head shots and several full body shots. While your first portfolio shots don't have to be professional standard, they do need to be a good standard – clear images of you posing for the camera. Finding An Agent Armed with a portfolio, it's time to start looking for an agency to represent you and find shoots for you. Many modeling agencies hold open calls and these allow any potential model to attend and be judged on their credentials. Scouts also travel the country looking for potential models, although you must be wary of scams that seek to do nothing but take your money. Your Best Attributes Flexibility and persistence will be key to your success. Don't expect to win your first shoot or be represented by the first agency you approach. If this does happen then sincere congratulations, but it is rare. Different agencies have different requirements and this means that agencies may turn down models that are seemingly ideal for a modeling role. The male modeling world can provide a lucrative and enjoyable career but it is also challenging and requires hard work and dedication to succeed.
