Business trips are often necessary for a small business owner. They can be extremely boring and often a lonely experience, but they need not be! If you join business networking platforms like Ecademy & Ryze you really do have a friend in every city. Next time you are traveling by yourself why not get in touch with other members that live in the same town? The best way to find the good restaurants, lively bars and cultural places to visit is by meeting local business people. It sure beats watching TV alone in a hotel bedroom! If you miss your family why not invest in a small web cam? Buy two, one for home and one for your laptop and you will be able to see your family whilst you talk. A great idea is to have it on whilst you work in your hotel room even when you are not communicating. This way you will almost feel like you are in your own living room even though you may be hundreds if not thousands of kilometers away. A web cam is also useful if you need to get in touch with your office and need to have a conference call with your employees or business partner. Most hotels now have leisure centres where you can work out your body and get back in shape. Usually the gym area gets busy early in the morning before people start their job and around 5:00pm so this is the best time to go and meet new people. After a decent workout and a sauna you will have definitely earned the right to indulge in your favourite tipple and a nice meal! Another great idea is to always introduce yourself to the hotel manager. Not only are you likely to get better service but s/he will be well connected in the local area and know all the favourite spots. The hotel might even have free buses organised to the popular tourist destinations and if you are lucky they will have arranged discounted entrance fees for their guests. You might be too busy to visit the museums and art galleries back home but these are great places to visit to while away a few hours when traveling alone. Most of these types of places do not even charge an entrance fee. Gadgets can make life easier on a business trip. I have a USB key that allows me to connect to the internet wherever there is a signal available. I almost get broadband internet connectivity without having to pay the exorbitant hotel charges for surfing the internet. This means that I can sit in the lobby or bar area whilst surfing the web and connecting with people back home. You might be an arcade game fan so a hand held Playstation could help you while away the hours in the evening. There are great games available for mobile phones that you can download but personally I am not a fan of playing on such a small screen. If you enjoy reading, you can catch up on the latest business books or why not read the new best selling fiction? If you don't like reading why not listen to self help motivational tapes? Traveling alone does not need to be boring. How do you pass the time when traveling alone?
