Connections Are the Key to Memorable Events

Submitted by: Bill Parsons

When you think of the moments where you were the happiest, have you ever noticed that they were times when you were doing something relatively simple? You don't have to win awards or land million dollar contracts to have a wonderful bank of memories to draw on. So what is it that leads to happiness?

It's About Connections

What makes an event memorable? It's the connection you feel to either the place where you were at the time or the people who shared the event with you that make it truly memorable. It's not a question of how much you spent, what you wore, or how you got there.

Here's an example: You eat every day. How many meals have you had in your life, as opposed to those that you remember in detail? If you stop to think about it, what separates the memorable meals from those that form part of the background of your life has to do with who you shared your food with, as opposed to what you ate. This is how it should be because if we don't feel connected to each other, life is a pretty lonely place.

Sharing Activities Together Makes for Great Connections

Another way to make great memories with other people is to participate in an activity together. Have you ever participated in a team sport, like basketball? It's amazing how working with other people toward a common goal, like scoring more baskets than the other team, can bring you together.

The pace and rhythm of a basketball game is constantly changing, as are the demands on the players. It's possible to go from frustration to anticipation to either joy or heartache in the matter of a few short seconds. Who hasn't watched a basketball flying through the air and asked whatever Force you believe in to either make it go through the hoop or stay out (depending on what team you are on)?

Either way it works out, you don't have a lot of time to savor the victory that making or missing the basket gives you, since in a few moments another player will have the ball and the game continues. After you have finished playing, you may not remember every play you made. Hopefully you won't dwell too long on the baskets that you didn't make, because life is far too short to spend a lot of time on the things you can't change.

Instead focus on what it felt like to participate in the game with your fellow players. You got to practice your teamwork skills, which is always a good thing, and hopefully you showed good sportsmanship while you were playing and after the game was finished.

Didn't it feel good to be part of the effort, no matter what the score was at the end of it? I bet it did. In the end what you remember is how everyone on the team interacted together...how well they connected. And that is what great memories are made of!
