Increase Your Visibility With An LED Turn Signal Mirror

Submitted by: Jonathan Hammond

Road traffic statistics bear testimony of the fact that an alarmingly high percentage of all road accidents are due to lane-changing and merging traffic occurrences on the roads. A considerable proportion of these accidents are actually fatal. Side mirrors are therefore essential to safe driving, but they can be enhanced to make driving even safer. High-intensity LED lamps can be used to turn ordinary exterior side view mirrors into safety features that imposingly hold the attention of fellow drivers.

LED signal mirrors function as traditional side view mirrors when signals and hazards are not activated. Their special features come into use only when a turn signal is activated; a flashing light appears in the corresponding mirror and alert drivers in the blind spot; or when emergency hazard flashers are used, so that both mirrors begin to flash warning signals. With more and more taller vehicles such as SUV's, trucks and mini-vans on the roads, a motorcycle has a higher risk to be ‘hidden’ – that is, of being in the blind spot – by the larger vehicles. Turn signal mirrors fit not only to four-wheeled automobiles but equally to motorcycles, and big rig trucks. LED lights flash with such intensity that they cannot be missed by drivers that are even two or three cars back. In fact, they may be the only visible indicator to the latter. The directional lens featuring in this type of side view mirror intensifies the LED light so that it is visible over a full 180 degrees angle.

LED signal mirrors are usually positioned at the eye level of adjacent drivers, which indeed makes them a lot more visible and noticeable than typical signal lights. In fact, these LED mirrors illuminate a fifth of a second faster than the conventional incandescent tail lights; and this particularity provides the drivers who are in the blind spot of the vehicle equipped with a LED signal mirror an additional seventeen feet of reaction distance when traveling at a speed of sixty-five metres per hour. Thus, whereas other accessories simply help soften the impact of an accident, these mirrors actually help prevent it from happening. One of the latest features of the signal mirrors is the light strips that are sealed in polycarbonate.

However, drivers often ask themselves whether LED signal mirrors may be distractive to them. This is not the case at all; whereas fellow drivers see an attention-getting bright light, the driver of the vehicle equipped with this illuminated mirror will only see a subtle flashing light. Moreover, some LED lights can be placed on the sides of the mirrors, so that the driver does not even see it at all. Some present day, sophisticated turn signal mirrors are even intelligently equipped with electronic sensors which automatically adjust the intensity of the light so that it displays brighter during the day and dimmer at night. Contrary to several other automobile gadgets, signal mirrors can thus neither be a distraction to the driver of the vehicle that is equipped with it, nor to surrounding drivers on the road.
