Is Plastic Surgery Really the Answer?

Submitted by: Beth Munoz

Many people have self-esteem issues. Sometimes these issues were brought on by ridicule, and would never have occurred otherwise. Then again, some people have a predisposition to low self-esteem because of various mental disorders.

Some people just try to cope with the way that they look, while other people choose the more drastic option of getting plastic surgery. The latter category of people generally have the financial means to be able to afford plastic surgery in the first place. But, then again, some people go into significant debt in trying to create an image of themselves that they never become satisfied with.

There are dozens of forms of plastic surgery, each one for a different part of the body. Nowadays, whatever you want changed can usually be changed. However, if you are seriously considering plastic surgery, you should first think about if you're really ready for such a transformation.

One of the things that most people want to change about their appearance is their weight. Now, there are some people who think they're fat when they really aren't. Those people are usually anorexic, and instead of surgery, they will need therapy.

That being said, there are some people who definitely do need flatter midsections. They think that surgery is the answer, because they want immediate results. Well, they need to realize that if they're significantly overweight, they won't be allowed to have weight-reduction surgery because of safety reasons. Why not? Because a person who is really overweight for their body type is in danger of having a heart attack. The risk of them not reacting well while under anesthesia is especially high, and no surgeon in his or her right mind would want to risk a lawsuit.

So, for these people, surgery definitely isn't the answer. They will need to change their diet first, so they can start changing themselves for the better. For this purpose, their primary care physician will refer them to a nutritionist. Also, the person will need to join a gym and hire a personal trainer to learn how to exercise properly. This will not only enable weight loss, but it will cost far less than a surgical procedure.

Now, there are some people who aren't concerned with their weight, they're unhappy with a certain facial feature. The most prevalent feature that people want changed? Their nose, of course. If you were to walk down the street, you'd probably see a bunch of people with extraordinarily large noses, so at least these people aren't alone in their wish for a smaller nose.

However, sometimes it's better to leave a large nose the way that it is. Some people just are not prepared for the amount of recovery time that is needed, during which time breathing will definitely be more difficult. Then, when the bandages are taken off, the nose isn't in proportion to the rest of the face. This is usually referred to as the "Michael Jackson" nose. So, be aware of every risk, and consider safer alternatives.
