He busied himself giving instructions to the waiter, and I turned to Marla and asked, “Marla, what do you do these days?” She was a picture of tranquillity and understanding. Perhaps I had never noticed before how truly beautiful she was. Her shoulder-length hair seemed to be blowing with the breeze, yet there was no breeze. Slowly she reached over and took my hand in hers. Looking at me with eyes that could illuminate the night sky, she smiled and said, “My responsibilities with the company have increased — just completed a major project, and now I’ve been given possibly the greatest assignment of my career.” “Oh, congratulations!” I exclaimed, feeling her soft warm hands on mine. “Does this mean that we’ll see you more often?” “Well,”she said thoughtfully, “my new assignment will certainly make it possible to see you more frequently.” “How so?” I asked. “John, my new assignment is to assist Gideon in his work with you.” The full impact of her words took a while to sink in. I was becoming uneasy again. Whenever Gideon and Marla had been in touch with me in the past,events seemed to go to extremes. Gideon broke into my thoughts as Marla gently removed her hands from mine to reach for her glass of wine. “Not to fear, John,” he said. “The most difficult part of our work has already been accomplished.” “And what was that, Gideon?” “It was to stay with you over the past years, but not to interfere in the tests you were going through. Can you imagine how difficult that was for me?” “No,Gideon! I can’t imagine how that could have bothered you.It certainly wasn’t a picnic for me. You were watching while I was roasting. Somewhat like Nero fiddling while Rome burned. Why didn’t you do something? At least you could have saved Mardai from the illness that took her away. To you it was nothing; to me it was everything! What good is all this stuff and all your power if you don’t lift one little finger to help someone, especially someone you care about?” I was really beginning to uncover old wounds when I realized that I was the guest here and I was behaving in a most improper manner.
