Spirituality Information - Journey In The Fields Of Forever ( Part 14 )

Submitted by: John Harricharan

Their mother would have really been proud of them. Especially since her death, the bond forged by the three of us was extremely strong. We delighted in simple pleasures, like a family barbecue on the back porch or just gathering around the kitchen table commenting on the latest news. Sometimes when I look at them, I realize that our children come to stay with us for only a very short while. Obvious as it may seem, everyday they are with us is one less day we have them. Eventually they must go their own way, blaze their own trails, make their own mistakes and reap their own consequences, even as we ourselves did.

This particular evening, I was quietly sitting at the kitchen table, reading a new book a friend had sent me and sipping away on a mug of coffee when the phone rang. I picked it up, only to hear the voice of Gideon saying, “Hi John! Just wanted to see if Marla and I could visit with you? We’re in the area and could get to your home in about fifteen minutes.”

“Sure, Gideon. That would be great. The kids are out for a while, so I don’t have any ‘daddy’ things to do right now. By the way, I saw Marla the other day. Hate to say it, but she looks a lot better than you do. . . .”

“I know,I know,” he interrupted with feigned sadness. “She said you didn’t look bad yourself, either. We’ll be over in a few minutes.”

Gideon’s visits, especially when Marla was with him, were always unpredictable. You would never know where the conversation would lead nor what would happen next. The coffee had not even finished brewing when they arrived. There was a knock at the door separating the kitchen from the porch and I peered through the glass at the smiling faces of Gideon and Marla.

Ushering them inside, I greeted them warmly and seated them at the kitchen table while I poured a round of coffee.
