Spirituality Information - Journey In The Fields Of Forever ( Part 41)

Submitted by: John Harricharan

I stood there for a long while drinking in the sounds of the breakers as the lilting melody of “. . . and you my sweet Penelope, out there somewhere you wait for me,” carried me away.

I remembered that incident in vivid detail and replayed the tape once again in my mind as I waited for dinnertime to arrive. I glanced at my watch. Just another hour or so.

Closing my eyes, I returned to the event in my memory and hit the replay button. I remembered so well how I had left the balcony behind and had gone for a walk on the beach. Rows of oleander mixed with frangipani lined the pathways as the lingering scent of jasmine perfumed the air. Finally, I found myself under a palm tree facing the mighty ocean where each one, as in a mirror, sees himself. More of Knibbs rushed through my thoughts...

The mountains are all hid in mist; the valley is like amethyst; The poplar leaves they turn and twist; oh, silver, silver green!

Out there somewhere along the sea a ship is waiting patiently, While up the beach the bubbles slip with white afloat between.

A faint rustling made me turn as I noticed Kim walking toward me. Under the starry skies, she was the vision of an angel come to earth. The wind tossing her hair and the dancing rivers of light on the water joined in creating a vision to be envied by the gods on Mt. Olympus. “Hi, again, John,” she said as she approached, “we’ve got to stop meeting like this, you know. Waiting for your Penelope? What else might Mr. Knibbs have to say?”

The words flowed forth with such intensity, as if Henry Herbert Knibbs himself were reciting them...

There ain’t no sweet Penelope somewhere that’s longing much for me, But I can smell the blundering sea and hear the rigging hum;

And I can hear the whispering lips that fly before the outbound ships, And I can hear the breakers on the sand a-booming,‘Come!’

“It touches you deep inside, doesn’t it?” she said, “makes you want to just get up and go. I love poetry that speaks of the wanderlust.”

“Me, too,” I replied.

We stared out into the surf as she offered, “Want to join me? Just going down the beach.”

“Love to,” I said as we started walking. Then I asked, “Will you be staying long?”

“Another day or so. How about you?”
