Stop Unhealthy Procrastination

Submitted by: Gabriel Adams

Why do we procrastinate on getting in shape and eating healthy foods? What is holding us back? The obesity epidemic is in full swing, particularly in the US, and it shows little signs of slowing. What are we doing wrong?

To say that American’s don’t get enough exercise or eat right is oversimplifying the source of the problem, as true as that is. It’s time to look closer. What is it behind our inability to eat a healthy, balanced diet, and what is it that is keeping us from our exercise?

At first, we look at fast food chains. There is always a temptation to pass the blame off on something that is somewhat outside the realm of our control, such as the food available to those on the go. While this is a semi-legitimate argument, it is a bit of a cop-out, honestly.

Another common scapegoat is our work/school schedules. People are busy these days; that much is most certainly true. And yes, it is difficult to find and/or make time to get to the gym and consume reasonably healthy meals. However, again, this is not the true root of our problem.

The real issue here was mentioned in the first sentence: the “P” word. It’s a disease much more common than obesity. That’s right—procrastination! Procrastination could be said to be our absolute worst enemy (other than fear and hatred, of course). It is procrastination that allows projects to be unfinished, relationships neglected, housework undone, vehicles un-maintained—and yes… our bodies malnourished, overweight and out of shape!

That’s it. End of story. There’s the problem. See ya later. (That was easy.)

WAIT! Not so fast, you know it’s not enough to identify a problem. We must uncover the solution to this pesky ailment, procrastination. But what can we do? Will we ever be cured of procrastination?

How do we stop procrastinating? If we could ease up on the talk, and put a move on the walk, we’d be good to go. And that’s true both figuratively and literally, when it comes to being healthy. Figuratively, we need to do less planning and dreaming, and take more action. Literally, if we would walk more—even 30 minutes a day—we would shed many pounds!

Combine that with drinking more water and using a little common sense when eating meals, and we’ll be seeing some major changes, positive ones, in that body of ours! Sure, it may be easier said that done, but it is not impossible! It’s all within our reach.

What is most important is to identify the areas of your life where procrastination is causing problems, holding you back, and keeping you stuck in the mud—take that “P” word, and nip it in the bud! That even rhymes! That’s not the point, though. The point is that we can conquer this evil habit of procrastinating!

So keep your eyes keen and your mind sharp, and soon you’ll be discovering many ways that you can improve your life, where procrastination has been holding you back. Once you do, you’ll make changes and see changes before you know it. And the rest will be history.

Ok, procrastinators anonymous (that’s almost all of us!)—Get well soon!!!
