In playing tennis, knowing how to lose with a smile like an ideal sportsman is of great consequence. This is the primary and most remarkable law of tennis all tennis players should adhere to, while the second law is to win in a humble and generous manner without gloating over your opponent’s loss. Although the object of playing a tennis match is ultimately to win, it should be in a manner that is fair and square not only in the eyes of the players but also those of the spectators. If you win a tennis match unfairly, everybody else would consider it as a defeat since the victory falls short of the ideals of the game. But even if you lose and you gave your best in playing the game, your opponent’s victory is considered as a victory of the better man – better prepared in terms of physical, mental and psychological preparation prior to the match. Not playing your best is like robbing your opponent the right of beating you at your best since he prepared for the match. This is why most tennis followers say that the most important facet of a tennis match is how you play the game wherein a good defeat is far more praiseworthy than an underserved victory. Every tennis player should play tennis matches for the sake of the game, the camaraderie between players and the excitement it gives both players and spectators since spectators equally deserve the best for the effort of coming to the stadium just to watch you play. All tennis players whether they are a weekend player, a member of the varsity or a pro have the obligation to play their best in public since they get their reward in the form of personal popularity – a tribute only the spectators can give. During match plays, tennis players should strive to keep competitive spirit alive regardless if he is ahead in the game. Playing a match requires tremendous physical and psychological expenditure on players who have to continually attack and defend while trying to upset one another’s rhythm in order to win. Match play is a constantly shifting battle of physical and mental prowess in order to come out on top. It is incumbent to all tennis players to make necessary game adjustments especially if the player is on the losing end and requires intense concentration in order to play the game at a high competitive level. Match plays should be played one game at a time in order to be able to come up with a strategic and advantageous position over an opponent. It should be combined with maintaining a poker-faced attitude in order not to show your weakness or waning spirit to salvage a losing game until you are able to level the score. However, if this does not happen, then at least you have given your opponent the chance to play hard and sweat for each and every point before winning the game against you. However, always keep in mind that while doing so you should always do it in the best spirit of the game - easily, happily, and with enjoyment for the sake of the game.
