What You Should Know About Gum Disease

Submitted by: Gabriel Adams

Our mouths are a stomping ground for bacteria. Food and other particles form to cause plaque. In this occurrence it’s necessary to have your teeth professionally cleaned to prevent further difficulties.

Gingivitis is one of the results of this neglect and causes your gums to swell and bleed. When gingivitis continues without treatment the gums begin pulling away from the teeth causing a condition called periodontitis. Eventually this can cause the gums, bones, and connective tissue to be destroyed.
Treatment for gum diseases vary depending on the level of severity.

In mild cases a professional cleaning and recommended oral hygiene will eliminate the problem. However, in more severe cases professional cleaning may need to be accompanied with medications such as antibiotics, antiseptic, and enzyme suppressants. In extreme cases the only option may be surgery. This may be limited to simple tartar removal or cleaning of the pockets or complete extraction. In either case you may decide to get a second opinion before moving forward to any surgery. What many people don’t realize is that these types of disease may cause other health problems such as: risk of stroke, low birth weight infants, and even diabetes.

There are several precautions you can take against gum disease, for instance, brushing your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing will also help in the fight. A routine visit to the dentist is necessary to be aware of any significant problems and its cleaning resources are proven to protect against gum disease. Eating a well balanced diet will make your mouth develop healthier habits.

Finally, being tobacco free will be in the best interest of dental health. Be aware of your options and the result of not putting your best effort forth. Be kind to your health by nurturing yourself with the best dental care.
